Fleas control in Auckland

Fleas are usually noticed one of two ways: the dog or cat will not stop scratching, or people start getting itchy bites around their ankles and lower legs. What makes fleas frustrating is that the adults you can see are a small fraction of the problem - most of the population is eggs, larvae and pupae sitting in carpet, bedding, rugs and the gaps between floorboards. Pupae can lie dormant for months and hatch in response to vibration and warmth, which is exactly why an empty house can suddenly seem full of fleas when someone walks back into it.

Signs you have fleas

  • Small itchy bites clustered around ankles and lower legs
  • Pets scratching, biting at themselves or losing hair
  • Flea dirt - tiny black specks in pet bedding that turn red-brown when damp
  • Fleas appearing suddenly after a house has been empty for a while

Why it matters

  • Bites are itchy and can become infected from scratching
  • Some people react strongly to flea saliva
  • Fleas can carry tapeworm, which pets pick up by grooming
  • Populations rebuild quickly if only the adults are treated

How we treat fleas

  1. 1

We treat the environment - carpet, soft furnishings, skirting gaps and pet resting areas - because that is where the eggs and larvae are.

  2. 2

Treatment is designed to keep working as dormant pupae hatch over the following weeks.

  3. 3

We ask you to vacuum thoroughly before and after, which physically removes eggs and triggers pupae to hatch into the treatment.

  4. 4

Pets need treating at the same time by your vet - an untreated pet will simply reseed the house.

What our customers say

It was the Sunday of a long weekend, and after having set off multiple bombs and cleaning for hours we realised we needed to get someone in. I expected to leave messages and hear back on the Tuesday - but no. Marie phoned me back about 15 minutes after I left the message. Half an hour later she called back - she had found one of your workers to come and spray our house that day. On a long weekend, on a Sunday, and at no extra cost. We were in a pretty dire situation, and the kindness and efficiency made the world of difference. The roaches moved out, and we now have a clean, happy home.

It's really hard when you've never had any pest issues before to know where to start. I rang several different companies but Marie's lovely calming and reassuring manner helped me choose you guys. Both Mike and Stuart have been fantastic to deal with - Mike has taken quite a few phone calls from me, I called him my bed bug counsellor! You've made a horrible stressful situation seem like it was all under control.

Fleas - common questions

I don't have pets - why do I have fleas?
Usually because a previous occupant did, or because rodents or possums have been in the roof or subfloor. Flea pupae survive a long time without a host and hatch when they detect warmth and movement, so a newly occupied house is a classic trigger.
Why are there still fleas a week after treatment?
Because pupae are sealed and highly resistant, and they keep hatching for weeks after the adults are gone. The treatment is designed to still be working when they emerge. Continuing to vacuum through this period genuinely helps.
Do I need to treat my pet as well?
Yes, and at the same time. Treating the house without treating the animal means the animal reintroduces fleas immediately. Your vet is the right person for the pet side of it.
