Silverfish control in Auckland
Silverfish are the small, teardrop-shaped, silvery insects that dart away when you move a stored box or turn a bathroom light on. They like damp, dark and undisturbed places - bathrooms, laundries, wardrobes, subfloors and anywhere paper or fabric is stored. They do not bite or carry disease, but they feed on starches and cellulose, which means books, photographs, documents, wallpaper and natural-fibre clothing. The damage is slow and easy to miss until something stored for a while comes out ruined. Silverfish are also a reliable indicator of a moisture problem worth investigating.
Signs you have silverfish
- Small silver insects moving quickly when disturbed
- Irregular holes or grazed patches on paper, book bindings and wallpaper
- Yellow staining or fine scales on stored fabric and paper
- Activity concentrated in bathrooms, laundries, wardrobes and subfloors
Why it matters
- Damage to books, documents, photographs and wallpaper
- Damage to natural-fibre clothing and stored fabric
- Their presence usually indicates excess moisture, which brings other problems
