Rodent proofing in Auckland

Killing the rats in your roof solves this month. Closing the hole they came in through solves it for good. Rodent proofing is the part that makes treatment stick, and it is the part most people never get done.

Why baiting alone keeps failing

A bait programme reduces the rodents on your property. It does nothing about the gap under the eaves, the unscreened subfloor vent or the hole where the waste pipe goes through the wall. So the population drops, the noise stops, and four months later something else finds the same way in.

That cycle is why so many people think they have a permanent rat problem. They do not. They have a permanent entry point.

Proofing breaks it. We find every way in, seal them with materials rodents cannot chew through, and the treatment you have already paid for finally gets to hold.

How we treat rodents

Where they get in

A mouse needs a gap about the width of a pen. These are the ones we find most often on Auckland properties.

  • Gaps where pipes, cables and ducting pass through walls
  • Weep holes, vents and unscreened subfloor openings
  • Roofline gaps at eaves, bargeboards and soffits
  • Damaged or missing air-brick and vent covers
  • Gaps under and around external doors
  • Broken tiles, lifted flashing and roof penetrations
  • Overhanging branches and fences giving roof access
  • Cracked cladding, perished mortar and settlement gaps

How a proofing job runs

1

Inspect

A full external and internal check - roofline, subfloor, penetrations, vents, doors and the roof space. We are looking for routes, not for rodents.

2

Report

You get told what we found and where, before any work happens. No surprises on the invoice and no vague 'sealed the gaps'.

3

Seal

Each entry point closed with something appropriate to it - mesh, grilles, steel wool and sealant, door strip, sheet metal. Nothing a rodent can gnaw back through.

4

Verify

We check the work holds and tell you about anything outside our scope - a builder's repair, a tree that needs cutting back, a drain that needs attention.

Homes and businesses

The principle is the same. What is at stake, and what the job involves, is not.

Rodent proofing for your home

Most Auckland homes give rodents more ways in than the owner would believe. Weatherboard, piles and open subfloors, older roof spaces, and decades of pipes and cables punched through walls without being sealed behind.

  • Full inspection of roofline, subfloor and every penetration
  • Entry points sealed with materials rodents cannot chew
  • Advice on branches, fences and clutter giving them access
  • Works alongside treatment so the fix is permanent
  • Products and methods chosen around children and pets

Rodent proofing for your business

For a food premises, a warehouse or a hospitality site, a rodent sighting is not just unpleasant - it is a verification problem, a stock problem and potentially a trading problem. Proofing is the preventive half of a proper programme.

  • Survey of the whole building envelope, including loading bays
  • Doors, vents, ducting and service penetrations sealed
  • Findings documented for your food control plan or audit
  • Scheduled around trading hours and production runs
  • Rolled into your ongoing programme and re-checked at review

Signs you need proofing, not just treatment

If any of these sound familiar, the entry points are still open and treatment on its own will keep disappointing you.

  • The noise in the ceiling comes back every autumn
  • You have had more than one treatment at the same property
  • Droppings reappear in the same spot after a clean-up
  • You can see daylight from inside the subfloor or roof space
  • Bait keeps getting taken months after the first treatment
  • Neighbours are dealing with the same thing

Rodent proofing - common questions

Why do I need proofing if you are already baiting?
Baiting deals with the rodents that are already inside. Proofing deals with the reason they got in. If the entry points stay open, the next rodent along uses the same route and you are back where you started in a few months. Treatment and proofing together is what makes the fix permanent rather than seasonal.
How small a gap can a rodent get through?
Smaller than people expect. A mouse can get through a gap around the width of a pen, and a young rat through a gap about the size of a 20 cent coin. This is why proofing is an inspection job rather than a guessing job - the gaps that matter are rarely the ones you would notice walking past.
What do you actually use to seal the gaps?
It depends on the gap and the surface. Steel wool and sealant for small penetrations, mesh and grilles for vents and weep holes, purpose-made strip for door gaps, and sheet metal or hard fill where something is being gnawed through. Expanding foam on its own is not proofing - rodents chew straight through it.
Do you fix the damage rodents have already caused?
We seal entry points and advise on what else needs attention. Where there is structural damage, damaged insulation or contaminated material, we tell you what we have found and what should happen next so you can get it dealt with properly.
How long does a proofing job take?
A typical home is inspected and sealed in a visit. A commercial site depends on the size of the building and how much of it needs access - we scope that at the survey and give you a firm price before anything starts.
Is proofing worth it on an older Auckland home?
Often more so. Older weatherboard homes, houses on piles with open subfloors and anything with an unlined roof space give rodents far more ways in than a modern build. It usually means more entry points to seal, but it also means proofing makes a bigger difference.
