Gisborne Cockroaches in Auckland: How to Spot and Treat Them

Switching on the kitchen light at night and finding a large, glossy, dark cockroach on the bench is enough to give anyone a fright. The good news is that, in Auckland, it's very often a Gisborne cockroach, and these are a very different story from the cockroaches that genuinely infest homes.

At NZ Pest Control, we're regularly asked about treating Gisborne cockroaches in Auckland, and the first thing we do is make sure that's actually what you've got.

Gisborne cockroaches are easy to recognise once you know what to look for.

  • Large - often 25mm or more, noticeably bigger than the small cockroaches people associate with kitchens.
  • Glossy dark brown to black, with pale cream stripes along the edges of the head and the section behind it.
  • Wingless as adults, so they scuttle rather than fly.
  • A strong, unpleasant smell if they're disturbed or squashed.

They're mainly outdoor insects, living under bark, in leaf litter, mulch, firewood, and timber piles, and coming out at night to feed on decaying plant matter. Indoors is not where they want to be.

So why do they turn up inside? Usually because something let them in. Gaps under doors, worn weatherstripping, pipe penetrations, and firewood carried in from the woodpile are the most common routes. In cooler weather they may also settle into roof spaces and wall cavities.

It's worth knowing the difference between these and a German cockroach. German cockroaches are small and tan, and they breed rapidly indoors, so one sighting usually means many you haven't seen. A Gisborne cockroach wandering in from outside generally doesn't set up home in the same way.

If you've only seen the odd one, there's often no need to panic. Putting it back outside and closing off the way in may be all you need.

If you're seeing them regularly, or you're not sure what they are, that's when it's worth calling us. At NZ Pest Control, our approach is straightforward.

  • Identify the species first, because the right treatment depends entirely on what's there.
  • Treat the exterior where they actually live and travel, including the base of the house, entry points, and harbourage areas.
  • Check roof spaces and wall voids if they've been turning up inside.
  • Plan a follow-up visit where it's needed, rather than assuming one treatment will do everything.

Treatment works best alongside a few simple changes around the property.

  • Keep firewood and timber stacked away from the house, and off the ground where you can.
  • Clear leaf litter and thick mulch back from the walls and foundations.
  • Seal gaps under doors and around pipes, and keep weatherstripping in good repair.
  • Keep compost and rubbish areas tidy and away from the house, since they feed on decaying material.

Let us know about any pets or young children at home, and we'll plan the treatment around them.
