Wasp Season Has Started in Auckland: What to Expect This Spring

Wasp season is officially under way in Auckland. The wasps you've started noticing in the garden over the last couple of weeks are mostly young queens, each one coming out of hibernation to found a nest of her own.
At NZ Pest Control, October is when we start fielding the first wasp calls of the season, and it's also the easiest point in the year to get on top of a nest before it becomes a real problem.
A queen who survived winter spends spring alone, building a small paper nest from chewed wood pulp and raising her first batch of workers single-handed. Once those workers emerge, usually within a few weeks, the colony starts growing fast, and by late summer it can be thousands strong.
That's the key thing about the start of wasp season: right now, nests are tiny, queens are easy to disturb away from, and treatment is simple. Wait until January or February and the same nest is a much bigger, more aggressive job.
A few things to keep an eye on as the season gets going.
- A single wasp lingering around the same spot in the garden, shed, or eaves for several days in a row.
- Small amounts of grey, papery material appearing in gaps, vents, or roof spaces.
- A new, coin-sized hole in a lawn or garden bed with a wasp going in and out.
- More wasp activity than usual around outdoor rubbish bins or compost as the weather warms.
It's easy to assume one wasp isn't worth worrying about, but a single queen in October is exactly the stage where dealing with it is quickest, cheapest, and lowest risk. Leave her undisturbed and she'll have a fully staffed colony defending that same spot by Christmas.
At NZ Pest Control, our approach at this time of year is straightforward.
- Locate the nest, even while it's still small and easy to miss.
- Treat it properly the first time, so it doesn't simply relocate or rebuild.
- Use the right protective equipment and technique for wherever the nest has been built, from eaves to retaining walls to holes in the lawn.
- Give you practical advice on what's been attracting wasps to the property.
Auckland's mild spring weather suits wasps just as well as it suits the rest of the garden, so we see new nests starting across the whole city, not just in one type of property or suburb.
