Bed Bugs and Fleas in Auckland: What to Watch For This Summer

Summer in Auckland means holidays, houseguests, beach trips, and pets spending more time outdoors. It also means two unwelcome hitchhikers become more common: bed bugs and fleas. Neither has anything to do with how clean your home is, and both are very treatable once you know what you're dealing with.

At NZ Pest Control, we see a lift in calls for both as the weather warms and people start travelling, so here's what to watch for.

Bed bugs are the classic travel pest. They arrive in luggage, bags, clothing, and second-hand furniture, or move across from an adjoining unit, and they happen in expensive hotels just as often as cheap ones. They hide in mattress seams, bed frames, headboards, and skirting, and come out at night to feed.

  • Bites in a line or small cluster, often on arms, shoulders, or legs.
  • Small dark spots or tiny blood smears on sheets and mattress seams.
  • Shed skins or live insects along mattress seams and headboard joins.

If you suspect bed bugs, resist the urge to throw out the mattress or spray the room yourself. Most mattresses can be treated and kept, and supermarket sprays tend to scatter bed bugs into neighbouring rooms and wall voids, turning a one-room problem into a whole-house one.

Fleas are a different story, and warm weather is their friend. The fleas you can see are only a small part of the picture, because most of the population is eggs, larvae, and pupae hiding in carpet, bedding, rugs, and the gaps between floorboards.

Pupae can lie dormant for months, then hatch when they sense warmth and vibration. That's why a house left empty over a holiday can seem suddenly full of fleas the moment you walk back in.

  • Itchy bites clustered around ankles and lower legs.
  • Pets scratching, biting at themselves, or losing hair.
  • Flea dirt, which looks like tiny black specks in pet bedding and turns red-brown when damp.
  • Fleas appearing after a house has been empty, or in a home with no pets, where a previous occupant or rodents in the roof may be the source.

A few simple habits make a real difference over the summer break.

  • Check mattress seams and headboards when you arrive at any accommodation, and keep luggage off the bed.
  • On return, wash and tumble-dry clothing on a hot setting where the fabric allows.
  • Vacuum thoroughly before and after treatment, and treat pets with your vet at the same time.

Both pests need the right treatment done properly. For bed bugs, we confirm the identification first, treat the whole harbourage area rather than just the bed, and plan a follow-up visit to catch eggs that hatch afterwards. For fleas, we treat the carpets, soft furnishings, and pet resting areas where the eggs and larvae live (more on that on our flea control page). You may still see a few fleas for a week or two afterwards as pupae hatch, which is why serious cases get more than one visit.
