Spring in Auckland: Why Pest Activity Picks Up as the Weather Warms

- Fleas and cockroaches - both breed faster in the warmth, and fleas can hatch from dormant pupae the moment conditions suit them.
Warmer weather speeds up almost everything in a pest's life cycle. Eggs hatch sooner, young mature faster, and populations that were barely noticeable in July can double before Christmas.
It also changes how we live. Windows and doors stay open, we eat outside, and the garden gets more use, all of which give pests more ways in and more to feed on.
A little preparation now goes a long way.
- Wipe down benches, sweep up crumbs, and keep pet food covered or cleared away after meals.
- Tidy up leaf litter, firewood piles, and overgrown plants that touch the house.
- Empty anything holding standing water, from plant saucers to old buckets.
- Seal gaps around windows, doors, and pipes before pests find them first.
- Keep an eye on eaves, roof spaces, and the garden for early signs of wasp nests.
