DIY pest control vs a professional: when each one works

Plenty of pest problems are worth having a go at yourself, and we'd rather tell you that than take money for a call-out you didn't need. There are also a few where DIY reliably makes things worse - not because the products are useless, but because of how the pest behaves.

The short answer

For the occasional wandering insect, a visible wasp nest you can reach safely, or basic rodent trapping, DIY is often enough. For bed bugs, established German cockroaches, ants with an unseen nest, or any wasp nest inside a wall or roof cavity, DIY tends to scatter the population or leave the nest intact - and you end up paying for professional treatment anyway, on a worse problem.

Why do supermarket sprays not work on ants?

They kill the ants you can see, which are foragers - a small fraction of the colony. The nest and the queen are usually somewhere else entirely, so replacements walk the same trail within days. Effective ant treatment has to be carried back to the nest rather than killing on contact.

Can I treat bed bugs myself?

Realistically, no, and this is the one we'd push back on hardest. Bed bugs hide in places surface sprays don't reach, and consumer products tend to scatter them into adjacent rooms and wall voids - turning one room into a whole-house problem. If you think you have them, get the identification confirmed before doing anything.

Is professional treatment stronger?

It's more targeted rather than simply stronger. The difference is mostly knowing where the pest actually harbours, what species you're dealing with, and timing follow-up to the egg hatch. A certified Approved Handler is also trained in placing product safely around children and pets.
